Top Five Facts About Your Finger Wart

You may be suffering from an ugly finger wart. You are not alone. Many other individuals suffer from warts too. That however, doesn’t make your condition any less undesirable. If you want to understand how to deal with warts on your finger, you should know some basic facts about them first.

#1- Warts are harmless.

A finger wart is also known as a common wart. Normal wart growths will not kill you. They may even be painless especially if they don’t get rubbed or touched very often. An even better piece of news about warts on the finger is that they normally go away on their own after a couple of weeks or months. If your wart condition isn’t really bothering you, then you should just leave it alone. This is in fact, one recommendation that some doctors may actually give you. If you feel however that the wart in your finger significantly interferes with your life or causes you too much embarrassment, you may have it treated.

#2- A wart on the finger can be treated at home.

Some people choose not to go to a doctor for finger wart treatment. You may be able to get rid of your wart at home by using some popular remedies. One of the most commonly used remedy is the duct tape method. Putting some tape over the wart and leaving it there for several days can reduce the size of the wart. Not every home remedy like this however will work for every individual. If you want to consider other treatment options, you may want to consult your doctor about medication or minor surgical procedures.

#3- Warts are hard to kill.

Your finger wart shares similar characteristics with other wart types. One outstanding trait of warts is that they are difficult to kill. You may have to undergo several sessions of a treatment method before your wart is eliminated. Even when your wart does disappear, the virus that caused it may still be lying around dormant. Some time after a successful initial treatment, the virus may cause another wart growth. This is true even if you choose to undergo an expensive medical procedure.

#4- Common warts can be prevented.

The best treatment method for a finger wart is plain and simple prevention. If you don’t catch the virus that causes it, you don’t have to live with a wart or to look for solutions to it to begin with. Common warts are often spread through direct skin contact with the HPV virus. In some cases, using personal items or nail tools of someone with a wart may put you in contact with the virus. If you have a small skin cut on your finger, the wart virus may enter from there. The best way to prevent getting a finger wart is to be careful with what you touch and to maintain clean and dry hands.

#5- Patience is the key to successful treatment.

A finger wart will not go away overnight. Hence, you have to be patient. Once you start a treatment procedure, resist the urge to pop or manually scrape your wart. You could make your condition worse by manually spreading the virus across your skin.

A foot wart is one of the last things you would want to have. Even when nobody can see them, warts on the foot can be a great inconvenience. What exactly would a wart on the foot feel like and how do you prevent one from growing on your foot?

Foot Wart

Description of the Foot Wart

A foot wart is also known as a plantar wart. This kind of wart is often found on the sole of the foot. It is because of its location that it can potentially cause a lot of pain and discomfort. The mere act of taking a step can already be excruciating for some.

It is also because of its location that a foot wart may be mistaken for corn. Warts on the foot however most often come with clearly defined boundaries. They are slightly raised and come with distinct black spots at the center representing blood vessels that would otherwise be absent in corns. There may also be more than one plantar wart. There may be several warts around the sole of the foot or they may cluster closely together in which case, the group would be called mosaic warts.

Cause

A foot wart shares the same causal origins as all other warts. They are caused by certain types or strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). A small cut or opening near the sole of your foot could become the point of entry of this virus. Once it has found a way in, it could lie there for several weeks without showing any signs and symptoms of wart growth.

People usually get HPV that causes plantar warts from other people who have them. The most obvious way for the virus to transfer to your foot is through direct contact with a wart. Direct contact however is not the only way for the virus to spread. If you do not remember rubbing your foot on someone else’s foot wart, you may have gotten yours while walking barefoot. The virus can survive out of its host in moist environments. This means that locker rooms, swimming pools and public showers are possible places where you could get the wart virus.

Prevention

Preventing a plantar wart growth should therefore be quite easy for you. The best way not to get foot warts is to simply not walk barefoot in public places. If you have to be in any wet and public place, make sure that you wear rubber slippers or shoes. Aside from not walking around barefoot, you also have to refrain from using someone else’s socks and shoes. Your own footwear should be clean and dry when you wear them.

Treatment

If you already have a foot wart, you have no choice but to have it treated. Although you have the option to leave it alone until it disappears by itself, the pain and discomfort might be too much for you to bear. If this is so, the best solution would be to go to a doctor and ask for a treatment option that is best for you. He may recommend cream medication. If you have a more severe case, you may have to undergo cryotherapy or electric cauterization.

What is a Common Wart?

You may or may not develop warts. If you do though, you would want to know as much as possible about them to help you find ways to treat them. One kind of wart that you should pay attention to is the common wart.

Common Wart

What They Are

Like other warts, the common type is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Some would define common warts as the type with the dome top and cauliflower like appearance and texture. These warts may be brown or yellow with black spots and may grow on the hands, near the nails, elbows and knees.

Others however include some other subtypes of warts as common warts. These include flat warts that are often found on the faces or elbows of kids, periungal warts found on the nail, filiform warts that grow on the face and plantar warts found on the sole. Genital warts are often regarded as a separate wart condition because they can be potentially dangerous for women. Certain strains of HPV in the female genitalia may lead to cervical cancer.

Warts are often spread through direct contact. A person who touches the source of the virus however should have some small cut or skin opening for the virus to successfully transfer. HPV isn’t always transmitted through objects. It makes sense though to simply not share towels and personal things.

Deciding on a Solution for the Common Wart

A common wart shouldn’t be a reason for you to panic. They are generally harmless and benign growths. These warts will eventually disappear on their own. It may however, take a few months or even more than a year for the warts to go away. For some people this is simply unacceptable. This is especially if the warts are found on obvious and prominent parts of the body. It could be embarrassing to go around with warts. This is often a good reason to decide to have the wart removed.

Other people may also find some common warts uncomfortable. Warts on the feet for example may cause some pain and discomfort. You should also always consider going to a doctor if your warts begin to bleed or if they begin to grow in an alarming rate.

Treatment Options for the Common Wart

Your doctor would first have to evaluate your warts and your medical condition. The mildest form of treatment that he may recommend would be salicylic acid. There may be other stronger acids that you may opt for. You may also choose to go for cryotherapy, laser treatment or cauterization.

There are also a number of home remedies for the common wart. You can use duct tape and herbal ointment preparations. Since people aren’t all the same, some home solutions may not work for you. Many home remedies also do not come with their own standards for mixing and use. This means their level of effectiveness would differ across preparations.

You don’t have to live with a common wart. At the same time though you would want to be sure that you have the right treatment option and that you truly need to treat your condition.

What a Genital Wart Can Mean for You

Among the many types of warts, a genital wart is one of the most dreaded. This is especially true for women. What happens when you have genital warts and what can it mean for your health in general?

Overview of the Genital Wart

Both men and women are at equal risk of contracting a genital wart condition. Teens and young adults up to a little over thirty however are often more at risk than older individuals. This is simply because sexual contact, especially with more than one partner across a period of time is the major risk factor for this condition. Teens and young adults are therefore commonly at risk because they are the ones who are just beginning to enter sexual activity.

Causes of the Genital Wart

A genital wart condition is a sexually transmitted disease. Naturally, this would mean that sexual contact is the primary mode of transmission of the disease. The disease itself is caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

There are many HPV types. The few that cause genital warts may or may not lead to more serious conditions for women. HPV types 16 and 18 in particular have been linked to majority of cervical cancer cases. Every female should therefore pay attention to a genital wart outbreak. A doctor’s diagnosis can help confirm if an infected female is particularly at risk for cervical cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of a Genital Wart

The trouble with genital warts is that they do not always have obvious signs. Some warts also do not cause any pain and may only be minimally uncomfortable or itchy. A single genital wart may only be a few millimeters across and may closely resemble the color of the skin. They may be flat or raised. In some cases, the warts may be more obvious when they cluster together. In men, the warts may be found on the penis, scrotum or anus. In women, the warts may be on the vagina, cervix, urethra or labia.

Treatment for a Genital Wart

Self-treatment of a genital wart is often not recommended especially for women. If you do discover that you have warts, you and your partner should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Women may have to undergo a pap smear to determine the risk of developing cancer. Treatment for the cancer itself may simply consist of the application of medical ointments and creams. In some cases though, the warts may have to be removed through the use of lasers, electric cauterization or cryosurgery.

Prevention

The only way one can completely avoid genital warts is by not having sex at all. Since this may not be possible for many individuals, other methods may have to be resorted to for prevention. You may lower your risk of contracting genital warts by maintaining a monogamous relationship and by using a condom. These methods however are not full proof prevention methods.

Teens and young women may also take advantage of a new vaccine that offers some protection against some strains of HPV. If a female is already sexually active though, the best course of action would be to go for regular check-ups and to consult a doctor for options on genital wart prevention.

Keeping Planter Warts at Bay

There are a number of different kinds of warts. One kind that can be more painful than others is planter warts. What exactly are these warts and how can you deal with them?

Planter Warts

Painful Warts

All kinds of warts share similar traits. Planter warts are differentiated by the location of their growth. They are often found on the soles of the feet. Because of this location, they can cause some pain as the person walks. The pain sensation can be made worse by tight or closed footwear.

Like other warts, planter warts are more common among teens. They are flat but they have distinct boundaries and are slightly raised over the skin. They come in brown or gray and have black specs on the center. Warts on the soles may be less than an inch big. They may however cluster together. Because of their appearance, they can be mistaken for corns. On the flip side, more serious tumor growths may also be mistaken for warts by non-medical experts. Although warts do cause pain and discomfort, they are generally harmless.

Causes

Planter warts, like other warts are also caused by a strain of the human papillomavirus (HPV). This particular virus can be contracted through direct exposure to skin with warts or surfaces carrying the virus. Since warts on the sole are found where they are, it is easy to imagine that the virus can be contracted when one walks barefoot. You may particularly be at risk if you are in the habit of walking barefoot in warm and moist public baths and pools. The virus can enter through small skin cuts.

Treatment of Planter Warts

Many individuals choose to have planter warts treated because of the pain that they cause. This is despite the fact that these warts are not very harmful. Treatment of warts on the soles can consist of such varied methods as application of non-prescription wart cream, application of castor oil and the use of duct tape for several days. Some individuals however do not recommend treatment without the doctor’s approval. This is simply because treating your own warts by yourself may worsen your wart condition and may even damage surrounding skin.

Planter warts can be treated by skin or foot doctors. They may recommend ointments or they may use minor surgical procedures.

Although planter warts may disappear after treatment, they may not always stay away. It is important to understand that HPV can be quite resistant and may lie dormant in your skin even after treatment. Warts may therefore reappear some time after treatment.

Prevention

If you do not want to get planter warts, you should avoid walking barefoot especially in moist, public places. As a general rule, it also makes a lot of sense not to share towels, socks, shoes and foot care tools with anyone. You should also keep your feet and footwear clean and dry. Be especially careful if you have a cut on your foot.

You don’t have to suffer from planter warts. You can protect your feet from them by practicing proper foot care.

Breaking the Myth of Flat Warts

Common kinds of warts such as flat warts are often seen with great distaste. People who have them are often avoided and are sometimes even thought of as untidy individuals. These warts however are, for the most part, harmless and do not always reflect an individual’s hygiene.

Description of Flat Warts

Flat warts are also known as verruca warts. They are also called juvenile warts mainly because they are often found among teens. The term “flat” comes from their physical appearance. They usually have flat heads and are often no bigger than pinheads. These warts however are rarely ever seen as individual growths. They come in clusters or groups. In more severe cases, a cluster can contain up to more than a hundred warts. Flat warts have roughly the same color as the person’s skin. They can appear on the face, knees, hands and arms.

Strictly speaking, these warts are really benign skin tumors. They may itch a little but they usually do not constitute a serious medical emergency. What people with these warts often worry about though is the embarrassment that the warts may cause. Because not everyone understands what flat warts really are, they may begin to avoid a person who has these. Among teens, warts may be a major blow to their self-esteem.

Causes of Flat Warts

The flat type of warts is caused by a strain of the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are however numerous strains of the HPV and not all of them can cause warts. Flat warts are contagious. They do not however easily transfer from one person to another. There has to be direct contact and a small skin opening must be available through which the virus can enter. Direct contact however does not simply mean skin contact. You can also get the virus by sharing the personal things of individuals with warts. These would include towels and shavers.

Treatment of Flat Warts

Most of the time, flat warts disappear on their own. There are also other instances though when they can recur after having disappeared for some time. This means the virus has been present all along but may have only lain dormant. If these warts do not pose significant discomfort or impairment of daily functions, doctors may recommend leaving them alone.

An individual however who is significantly bothered by the warts may opt to have them treated. One can buy non-prescription cream medication that contains salicylic acid as a preliminary attempt at treatment. Depending on the skin condition, a doctor may recommend stronger medication like tretinoin.

In some rare cases, severe cases of flat warts may be treated more aggressively. A doctor may use a procedure known as cryosurgery in which the warts are frozen nitrogen, allowing them to slough off. They may also be electrically cauterized or surgically removed with a special laser.

Remember that a lot of other individuals have flat warts. There may be no need to feel undue anxiety over them. If you really prefer to treat them though, ask for the opinion of a skin expert first.

Most types of warts will not kill you. Even so, it can be both physically and emotionally alarming to have these growths in parts of your body. To temper your concern learn as much as you can and to select the appropriate treatment option.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is Linked to Warts

Main Cause of Warts

All wart growths share a common viral cause. A person who gets infected by the human papillomavirus (HPV) virus may develop warts. The virus is usually transmitted through contact with infected skin or personal items that have just been in contact with wart growths. One however should have at least a tiny skin cut for the virus to enter and cause wart growths. Scratching or pricking these growths may result in the spread of the virus to other parts of the body. The growths can appear in many different parts of the body.

Types of Warts

Warts come in different shapes and sizes. They can also grow in specific locations. The appearance, nature and location partly determine what the wart growths are called. Here are the common types you should be aware of:

Common wart growths are those that usually appear on fingers, elbows and knees. They are elevated, rough and hard. They do not have flat tops.

Planter warts are those that grow on the soles of the feet. Although warts, by nature are usually painless, this particular type may cause some pain because of walking and footwear use. Planter types are often obtained from warm and moist surfaces that have the virus. Walking barefoot on any surface increases a person’s risk of developing this type.

Juvenile wart growths have a reputation for being more frequent among kids and teens. They are also otherwise known as flat warts because they have flat surfaces. They are usually very small in size but they can cluster together which makes them more noticeable. These wart growths are often found on the face but they can also grow on the arms, hands and knees.

Treatment of Warts

Most types of wart growths disappear on their own. They may however be around for weeks or months before you finally go wart free. If you want to remove these growths safely and properly, you should always ask for the help and opinion of a skin doctor. Medical experts may recommend the removal of wart growths if they interfere significantly with a person’s daily functions. The mildest form of treatment would involve the use of chemical applications such as tretinoin and salicylic acid. If a person’s warts are particularly severe, a doctor may recommend cauterization, cryosurgery or laser removal.

Genital wart growths are one type that should always be treated. One reason for that is because they are highly contagious. Some kinds of genital warts may also put a female at risk of cervical cancer.
